Vibrations above 4.5k rpm in neutral/all gears
Hello friends,
Recently picked up a 2006 Ninja 250r with ~25k miles. It wasn’t well maintained by previous owners. Ended up replacing the carbs, rebuilding the petcock, adding an inline fuel filter, a new air filter, and putting in new plugs to get it riding again. Adjusted the valves to keep it running for more than about 10-15 minutes. Started having problems with really bad vibrations starting around 4.5k rpms that just get worse with higher rpms. I think they might have started after dropping the bike after stalling in 1st gear when parking. The vibrations happen in neutral in the driveway and in all gears when riding. I’ve tried: -carb sync x2 -replacing the plugs again (one went out of spec - gap too small) -adjusting the valves again (two went out of spec, but this might have been because I didn’t have a torque wrench the first time) -reinstalling and retorquing the engine mount bolts -replacing the cam chain tensioner -replacing both muffler gaskets -adding an extra nut to both muffler clamps (kept getting loose on the right side) -tightened the kickstand nuts (were loose) -oil and oil filter change None of these things have helped, and it seems that the vibrations may be getting worse the more that I ride. Is there anything else worth checking here? Or is it time for the shop/replacing the engine? Thanks |

At about 8k rpm there's a "chain scrolling" type noise, usually goes away around 9k, sometimes will hang on to 12k though. Sometimes there's a faint popping noise from the exhaust. I pulled the plugs. The gap is still good on the side that got squished on the last plug. I might have made a mistake installing the other plug that bent it. Both are very white on the ground electrode - I think this means the mixture is too lean? |

These are on the rich side from the factory, so you probably have have non-stock or dirty jets. Are your new carbs OEM or copies? Non-OEM carbs are known to cause tuning problems and contain oddball jetting. Not that this explains the severe vibration.

They're some knock off carbs, so that jetting problem may indeed be the case. The old plugs didn't have that color though, so maybe they've clogged? Or the petcock is bad?

You can test petcock flow by sucking on the vacuum hose with the output line running to a container. It doesn't take much vacuum to open it.
A clogged tank vent can prevent flow too. |

Petcock was bad. It was draining gas when I turned it to on/res. I had already rebuilt it a few times, so I replaced it with an OEM petcock. Now I think the bike is running very rich. The throttle is very slow to respond and I have to ride the clutch longer in first gear to prevent stalling. The vibrations are a lower frequency than they used to be and sound of the bike overall has a lower pitch.
