2009 ninja 250 new engine
Hi,
I am planning on buying a used engine on eBay to replace my current one that I think is fried. Any suggestions on what to look for before I buy and after I receive the engine? |

What happened, what makes you think it's bad?

Look at the oil and clarity. I'd be cautious if the oil had a strong smell of gasoline it in. Also, see if they can do a compression test or offer some kind of warranty. Check to see if there are any signs of leaks.
The engine weights about 100 lbs.

Before you install the engine make sure you can manually turn the the engine over by using the crankshaft rotation bolt (turn counterclockwise) behind the stator cover plug. An engine that will not rotate is probably seized.

Man, are all of you guys mechanics?
This is f*cking frustrating. Does anyone know of a good guideline of how to remove an engine? with pictures would be great. I found this on youtube, will this work? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oucMJW3LSVU and this on ninja250 http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/What_is...val_process%3F |

You didn't specify where you plan on buying it from. Most "dealers" should have all fluids drained. Now, if you buy it from some Joe off the streets at his house, he may still have the oil in there. If that's the case, you could look at the oil and see the color and clarity. Might even have the spark plugs in there too and if so, take a look at them and see how the engine was running.

Sorry. No linking to pirated service manuals from this site. Google can help here, and feel free to email or PM people information you'd prefer to share privately.

Doesn't matter. I'm uncomfortable with any search engine pointing to this site with a working link to a pirated service manual. Share it privately or elsewhere; no public links are permitted.

Blue - I'm not sure how I can be any clearer. No links to pirated service manuals. No exceptions, no caveats. If other forums want to risk Kawi's lawyers when a disgruntled poster forwards a link, so be it. Not going to happen here.

I got the part about pirated service manuals. I'm asking about another forum in general.

No problem linking to other forums. I've blocked a very small number of forum links in order to affect google rankings, but it's a very small list.
But if someone were to post: "Go to this forum and search on this to find a service manual", I'd still have to delete that thread here.

I am preping to replace the engine myself. Do I need to empty the gas tank and the carburetor bowls. I am thinking I will be working on it in about 2-4 weeks.
Any other suggestions,? |
