The R3 is no doubt going to be (is) a great little bike. Being the latest to the party, it just one upped all the other competitors in the class. I won't be getting one (cost) but I am under no delusions I will be able to keep up with one on any of the straight portions of the track.

$5K R3 or $7K FZ-09? Not sure I want an "improved Ninja" maybe I'll try something different for a while. Or $12K for both.

Interesting that Yamaha is smart enough to equip the bike with decent tires and not the IRC junk.

I sat on the new R3 at the Montreal Motorcycle show.
The seating position felt really weird. My balls were sitting on top of the gas tank. NOT comfortable. |

The Ninjette no longer comes with IRCs either, they have switched back to Dunlop for 2015.

Dunlop TT900 GP tires according to google
from the looks of it it seems to be a massive improvement It's a shame that the R3 isn't coming with the street radials but is getting a bias ply version instead, took the tires from a strength to a weakness

The reviews are now trickling in as the media had a track day at Thunderhill a few weeks ago.
Notable comment was "no more noticeable power than the Ninja". They have a shift light, but no slipper clutch, no ABS. Otherwise, specs are very similar to the Ninja 300. It's basically a Yamaha price undercut on the Ninja. |

I thought the Pilot Power Streets were only offered in a radial construction.

Saw a couple of them at the Spring show.
I am not a huge Yamaha fan though I do love the R6. It felt comfortable enough, I like the design of the tank but other than that it didn't really tickle my fancy. :P xD

It doesn't feel much different from a 300 IMO. The RC390 tank feels very narrow and like it doesn't hold your legs in at all. That one is the way different one.

FBC in Kearny Mesa was doing demo rides this past weekend and they supposedly had the R3 available....and free hot dogs.
They conveniently sent the email out mid-day on Saturday, which meant half the day was already over. |

Man I want to switch from carb N250 to f.i. R3 so badly, but really need to wait for reports from first batch of buyers. Just not sold on N300 reliability. But that abs and slipper clutch and parts availability.

1st bike. new 1995 harley davidson sportster
2nd bike. new 2001 harley davidson sportster 3rd bike. new 2007 Kawasaki Concours 4th bike. new 2007 Kawasaki ninja 250 5th bike. new 2008 honda goldwing 6th bike new 2012 kawasaki ninja 250 7th bike new 2012 kawasaki Concours 8th bike this year (carry over new kawasaki ninja 250) Point i would like to make is i have ridden many different types of motorcycles for 20 years, and like the ninja 250 the best. It is more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. I used to break the speed limit on the Concours in second gear! For me, the ninja 250 is perfect for around town, and short (less than 300 mile) riding days. Great mileage, inexpensive insurance, looks great, and it fun. |

Why not? The 300 is just an evolution of the 250, which has been around a long, long time and is thoroughly sorted at this point.
The R3 is new from the ground up. A true unknown.

The N300 in terms of reliability is pretty solid. She fires up like it's no ones business and she revs quickly and pulls hard for such a little bike.
The only "problems" with the N300 is that there was a recall on the ECU and the other problem is that the plastics are really cheap... I mean, very cheap. I believe it's only the 13' n300 but the plastic pieces on the front actually start separating and it looks bad. (mine is doing it) Not a huge deal, I think you could get a complete set of aftermarket fairings for like $500.

R3 is cheap, new model. I'll bet anything the 2016 version will have ABS -Yamaha does not want to be the only manufacturer not to offer ABS in the land of litigation lawyers. As for media opinions..meh..they cheerlead any new bike. |

I'd rather have a slipper clutch than ABS, I love how perfect every single downshift is no matter how bad I mess it up. I've intentionally tried to blip poorly and it still results in a near perfect revmatch so long as you blip at all

You can just install a slipper clutch on most bikes.
