The first dealer I went to to look at the 300 quoted me $8300 OTD!! I almost chocked to death laughing as I walked out. Saw the sales guys a week later and he was still trying to tell me what a great deal he was pedaling.
Personally I think it should be outlawed for dealers to do this just because when a new rider walks in the door it's cheaper to get a used 600/1000 in most cases. Then you have someone who has way more bike than they need or can use out trying to learn on public roads. |

Hint to any dealers: Bikes are probably very elastic. |

I agree with the other comments, too! This is why people start on 600cc and 1000cc supersports, cause they are actually affordable. There are more than 20 600cc SS in my area right now asking under 3 grand on craigslist and there is an R1 for 2 grand this one guy can't seem to sell. To make things worse, everyone with a Ninja 250 is asking a thousand over KBB. My buddy really wants a 250 but is "settling" for an SV 650. He can't find a clean pregen for less than about $2,400. This price mess starts at the dealer.
