need some advice
I am currently an account analyst. There's an opening for a financial analyst. Since my degree is in finance I would like to explore the field of finance. I've already expressed interest in the position to the VP of finance.
Should I inform my current manager that I am bidding for the position or should I just go thru the process with HR and let them inform my boss? Thanks, Tin |

You could always tell him yourself, and then ask him to put in a good word for you, if he likes your work ethic and would actually give a good recommendation then it couldn't hurt.

Difficult question Tin with no easy or correct answer. All sorts of factors to consider; how long have you been in your position, what is your relationship with your boss, will your boss have to back-fill your position, how big is the company, what is the corporate culture on internal moves (talk with someone that has done it), why are you doing it (someone is going to ask the question and the answer better not be "just because").
Remember how you handle this will most likely be seen by a lot of folks - do it right (what ever that may be) and it could open future opportunities, do it wrong and you could be on a dead-end road. Just some thoughts.

tin, if the positions are within the same company, and if there are established procedures for in-house job applicants (i.e. job interest forms), then speaking for myself, i would notify my present supervisor of my intentions to pursue another position within the company prior to starting that process.
that being said, the old guy has some great advise that i'd consider. good luck in whatever you decide to do

Entirely dependent on your relationship with your boss and you yourself. I would prolly tell him either way. I'd tell him that I'm looking to transfer and I hope he dies in a fire, or that I really enjoyed working with him but would like to follow something closer to my interests and degree orientation.
If you're not confident enough to tell someone eloquently to f off or you just don't want to mention it to him, don't. That way if for some reason it doesn't work, you don't feel awkward if you told him off and don't end up leaving |

Thanks Everyone.
I've been asking people around and they all have mix feeling. I just finished the transfer form and apply for that position on line. I plan on telling my boss (it's a she) tomorrow. We have a good relationship. I just don't want her to feel that I hate my current position and wanted to leave. That's not the case. I just think this is a great opportunity for me to advance within the company. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. P.S. I didn't know updating resume is so time consuming. Thanks again. |

Ok. I just had a talk with my manager. She was very supportive and encouraging. She even gave me details on the process. I put in a bid for the position through HR and also gave the VP of finance (Mike) my resume. I had a chance to work for Mike 3 yrs ago but took a different path and worked for someone else. I hope he doesn't hold that against me. He's a really nice guy and I don't think he's like that.
I took care of everything today and now all I have to do is wait for the phone call. Thanks again. |

You worry way too much. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your new job. Yes, you got it. No, stop second guessing. You're fine.
