Connecticut school shooting

What the **** is wrong with people? What on earth could those kindergarten and elementary students have done to this guy that he thought they deserved to die??? It is times like these when I wish there was a hell and individuals like him suffer till the end of time.

I have a first grader and this is rattling me to the core. Prayers to the families and the community.

Teachers acted like pros IMO. kept a cool head (as cool as possible) and got as many kids out as possible. Also just heard they found the guys mom dead in her house.

Prayers go out to all the families out there.

Elementary school?! Who the hell does this. It's said 27 people were killed including 18 CHILDREN. That last number alone is worse than columbine.

I saw her mom was among the dead at the school? Though I also saw reports of a dead body at his parents' house

A horrible, horrible tragedy. My heart broke when I heard of the news of children lost as well as staff. Completely devastating.

I'm actually up in Connecticut as we speak. It's all anyone is talking about. This is horrible. I've been watching the news since like 11. Had to turn it off, I was actually becoming ill from thinking about it.

This hits close to home for me. I'm from the next town over from where it happened. You never think that something like this can happen where you live, but I guess this goes to show you that it can. It makes me so mad and sad that this this guy did this. He's the same age as me! How can someone's life get so messed up that they resort to killing innocent children? It just boggles my mind.

Just a correction, the shooter is Adam Lanza, 20. His brother, Ryan, is being questioned. The official mixed the names up earlier.

That's so ****ed up. Whatever about how screwed up in the head someone who wants to kill themself is what makes them want to kill kids?

I wonder if a few teachers with CCWs being allowed have their weapons in their desk would have reduced the death toll.

Probably not. From what I've understood on the matter, it was pretty much confined to the one classroom.

These types of incidences are always so sad. I wonder how many more people have to die to gun violence before it's too late.

It's a shame when we protest the number of deaths due to a war, and fail to protest about the number of deaths due to gun violence.

In the 10 years from 2000 through 2009, more than 298,000 people died from gunshots in the U.S.

From 2001–present 6,518 servicemen and women were killed during the War on Terror: (Afghanistan and Iraq Wars).

God help us.

Let the anger pass before making decisions. One of the main problems is this guy was able to get in the building with weapons. I think schools should be just as hard to get into as banks. But that is just me.....

I can't even enter my kids school without weapons unless I have real business there. I am not saying my kids school has good security...... in fact, it blows.

Woa! slow your roll partner. I think you missed my point. I was using the two stats to show there is more gun violence and death in than in a war. The real War on Terror is on human kind.... everywhere.

BTW, did you know about 20 children are murdered every week in South Africa. To answer your question, it's not OK, however I do understand that this is life and it happens.

A bank is designed to protect assets...
The only building that is truly designed to protect civilians is a prison.

Most schools do have poor security.
I wont go into details but even a man with a rusty screwdriver can cause a death toll...

It just may be semantics but a child is an asset (figuratively) to our future and needs the similar protection from the general public just as if the parent was there. And a prison is designed to reduce freedoms, unlike a school should be a place to explore them.

Know what I mean?

We have played those scenarios many times before using both computer sims and real people. At the high school level to college the overwhelming answer is yes.

Without weapons, the death toll increased dramatically to two to three times over the armed scenarios. Even when the ccw holder was shot and killed around 80% of time he still made a difference.

In this case i'm not sure not sure if it helped, i'll need to do some research.

I know exactly what you mean...
But what i'm getting across is security many times impedes freedom.

Thats why its difficult to defend against these scenarios, and why sick people pick these places.

You and I are on the same page I believe. I think you just hit on one of the sources of the problem. Easy targets.... Make it harder, they just might choose another target instead.

Sacrificing liberty for safety, or the illusion of safety is tough. Rough situation to begin with. I picked up my son early from daycare today and hugged him and told him I loved him. He didnt know what I was so emotional, and I dont want him to know. Its sad because I tell him monsters dont exist... But they do. They just look like the rest of us.

The problem with your "statistic" is it doesn't differentiate between "good shootings" (self defense/Law Enforcement) and murders.

Also, in the same period ('00-'09), 411,649 people died in the US from traffic accidents. Where's your outrage at Ford and GM?

I've never been to a bank that's any harder to get into than simply walking in the front door. These days, in some areas, schools are much harder to get into than banks. But these feel-good "security" measures of course don't manage to stop anyone who's truly determined.

Anyone can walk into the front door of a school too but your missing the point yo. Your not gunna just walk into a bank and go straight into the vault. Change the perception and it might make a difference more so than any additional gun law and such.

Like I was saying earlier, go to my kids school in the AM. You will be greeted by an armed police officer. But if you come in the back door, you pretty much have all access. It's sad...

EDIT: As a person about to break the law, you gunna go where the police are? Most of the time no but crazy people do crazy things I guess.

What happened was really a disaster... It's clear that somewhere along the way humanity has been lost... My prayers go out to all those affected by this tragedy and hope to god that no one else has to go through this ever again.

That's because one side deals in logic, and the other lets fear guide their thoughts.

New laws wont solve these problems, or magically stop a killer... i wont even go there

Perception of security would be nice

There will need to be a balance of outward and hidden security measures
so parents are comforted, while students dont feel like they are in jail.
