It shouldn't start without the clutched pulled in. Even with the gear selector in neutral. Don't quote me on this but, until the clutch is disengaged there is still enough drag from the transmission, that the engine won't turnover.

My other 250 2004 and all 23 other bikes I own start in neutral without the clutch being pulled in.In fact the 2004 250 does have sticky clutch plates at times and will MOVE the bike forward even with the clutch pulled in.

Fair enough; I guess, I've always pulled my clutch in as I was driving cars with manuals before motorcycles.
Unfortunately, that is as far as I can go with any help. Or was that help? Though I am interested in what you find out. |

I believe that the clutch lever switch overrides all. If the clutch isn't pulled in, it won't start no matter what's happening with the other safety switches (kill switch, sidestand switch, neutral indicator).
EDIT: Nope, I was wrong. Just tested mine in the garage. If it's in neutral and the sidestand is up, my 2008 will start whether the clutch lever is pulled in or not. Sounds like it has to be your neutral indicator being the issue. The clutch lever shouldn't matter, and if the sidestand switch was keeping it from starting, it would kill the engine as soon as you put it in gear anyway.

Actually you were half right. The clutch switch was misaligned so the plunger was ALL the way out (no start) I jumped the connector and it worked so I checked the mechanical part (the plunger) and found it below the cluch lever.Once I put the plunger at the right place where the clutch lever pushed it in it worked fine with the side stand up and clutch out.Seems it has to be the right combo but the clutch switch seems to be the main key. Thanks for everyones help I now have a bike that starts when I hit the button

Sounds like the clutch switch isn't working then.
I assume that when you say "will not start", you mean that the starter motor wont turn over. The talk above about sticky clutch made me a bit confused, wether you mean the start motor is turning but the bike wont start, or the start motor doesnt turn. |

Ok,found out the clutch lever was bent in slightly, enough that it hit the bar before totally disengaging the clutch switch.Didn't find it till AFTER I bought a new switch.

I always kick up into neutral clutchlessly before I even stick in my key (safe when it's parked, right?) and then inset the key, flip my kill-switch back into the start position, and start the bike, all while I stand next to it. It remains on the kick stand and I do not have to pull in the clutch. Does everyone else warm up while sitting on the bike or something?!
Of course, mine's a J-series. |
